Charity description

Gainsborough's House Society logo
Thomas Gainsborough RA was born in Sudbury in 1727 and lived with his family in this Georgian townhouse until he was 13, when he went to London to study art, returning periodically to savour the surrounding Suffolk countryside. In 1958 the Grade-I listed building was purchased and a museum formed.

Gainsborough's House Society began building a collection of Gainsborough's paintings, drawings and prints which has become the most comprehensive collection of one of Britain's pre-eminent artists.

We are at a major point in the history of Gainsborough's House where we have a chance to not only ensure the survival of this jewel in the nation's heritage, but also to develop a national centre for Gainsborough.

Reviving an Artist's Birthplace: A National Centre for Gainsborough
Gainsborough's House has embarked on a major project to create a vibrant, innovative national centre to inspire audiences and secure the future of Gainsborough's House and the internationally significant collections.
