Maun Refuge supports Syrian refugees in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
We knew in 2015 we must respond to the world refugee crisis. From Stockholm to Sheffield people were reacting generously. We said 'Why not OUR town?' We found no reason why not and we certainly knew the cities were overstretched. So we set about making it happen here where we know the people, the services, the charities and the kindheartedness of local people.
The local authorities moved up a gear to provide the basics - access to housing, health services, benefits and education. What we as a local charity set out to do is to make that access easier, more responsive to personal need, and if possible quick!
There are five families here now and more to come under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme.
We are grateful for the help of 'Awards For All' lottery investment in our work and there have been many generous local donations. What we need now is money for expanding education, for laptops, interpreting, travel and for social events that inspire peaceful coexistence and above all celebrate our differences - whether in music, history, dancing or food!
