I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in September 2018 and have started the long journey to, what will hopefully be, a full recovery.
Throughout my treatment I will be raising money for Planets Charity via various fund raising activities to help fund IORT treatment for cancer patients in Southampton Hospital. Intra-operative radio therapy (IORT) comes in several forms and Southampton hospital have the Mobetron, an electron beam linear accelerator.
Using Mobetron technology, radiation is given by high-energy electron beams, delivered with precision to a very specific location immediately after a cancer has been removed. This enables surgeons and cancer specialists to deliver much higher doses to areas at a high risk of recurrence, but without causing damage to surrounding healthy tissue and organs, which would take place with conventional radiotherapy methods.
Planets Charity are lease purchasing the Mobetron (£1.1 million over 9 years with £550k to go). Internationally there are about 50 centres using it and its biggest use is breast cancer. Planets Charity hope to add Breast Cancer to the list of cancers treated here in Southampton.
