Mavis Richardson loves swimming and loves a challenge. In May she will reach 83 years of age and she has challenged herself to swimming one length of Keighley Leisure Centre's pool for every year of her life. This will be no mean feat for Mavis lives with a broken spine and cannot even feel her feet!  Five years ago she fractured three bones in her back due to osteoporosis.  Since then she has lived with pain and numbness in her legs and feet and has to walk with a rolator walking frame. But Mavis doesn't let her problems hold her back, she's made of stern stuff. A Yorkshire born lass she's kept fit since her childhood when, at the age of 12 she came 5th in a major Junior Dancing Championship at the Royal Albert Hall, beating contestants from all over the world.  At 18 she turned professional and also became a dance teacher.  Mavis says it is those years of dancing that have given her strong legs and have enabled her to keep active in later life. When her dancing career ended Mavis went to work for the church in Sheffield where she developed her passion for fundraising activities. She regularly spends time with people with dementia and carers and fully supports the work of DFK.

Event details

Magic Mavis's Swimming Challenge

Mavis's challenge will take place at Keighley Leisure Centre's swimming pool.  Due to the public opening times of the pool the event will take place over several days.  At midday on three separate days the pool has been made available to her for one hour.  She will be able to use her rolator to get to the water's edge then she'll slip gently into the water and get cracking.  Mavis is hoping to complete around 30 lengths each day in the hour allotted to her.  Of course she will have to take each day as it comes and may have problems with fatigue.  Away from the pool Mavis keeps very busy.  She helps to run film afternoons, musical events and social get-togethers at the sheltered housing premises where she lives.  The idea is to get people chatting and socialising together to prevent the loneliness and isolation that can be so common amongst the elderly.
However tired she gets though she is determined to succeed with her challenge and we are sure that regular donations to the mydonate page will keep giving her a boost.
